It’s events like these that really highlight the work of our Community Building and Engagement department and the impact it makes on our communities. In collaboration with Republic Services we celebrated National Neighborhood Promise Day on Friday, October 18th. This event brought together over 30 volunteers on a beautiful fall day wrap up some final projects at the newly installed senior exercise park and walking path at Plaza Roosevelt Apartments in Muskegon Heights.
A little over a year ago, Dwelling Place applied for and was awarded a $,50,000 grant from the Republic Services Charitable Foundation to support the renovation and transformation of the unused green space next to Roosevelt Apartments. The $50,000 grant from Republic Services, a national recycling and waste disposal company, is part of their National Neighborhood Promise Program aimed at revitalizing and restoring places and spaces in need with an ultimate goal of strengthening neighborhoods. National Neighborhood Promise Day is how Republic Services goes the extra mile to celebrate the projects they are investing in. The day centered around a group of local Republic Services staff and completing a list of projects outlined by Dwelling Place.
Together we installed new birdhouse in and around the walking path. These bird houses had been painted and decorated at a previous event by residents living at Roosevelt Apartments. We also planted large bushes throughout the park to accompany the beautiful tall Oak trees. Our final project was to tackle some disinvested planter boxes at a pocket park just around the corner from Roosevelt Apartments. This project was a request from the Roosevelt Neighborhood Park Association.
Mayor Kimberly Sims paid a visit and spoke at the event. We were very excited to have her at the event because the whole idea of the exercise park surfaced from a conversation with her a few years back.
