Dwelling Place is moving forward with activating downtown vacant storefront spaces thanks to financial support from Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. Over the next few weeks, we will be transforming five vacant storefronts along South Division in the Heartside Neighborhood. Two LED Kiosks will be used as “Neighborhood Information Stations” to activate underutilized storefronts. These kiosks will feature neighborhood news, showcase images of artwork created by neighbors and share local event updates. Ideally, the “Neighborhood Information Stations” will spotlight photos of nearby hotspots and create a visually engaging experience for pedestrians. Static photo displays will compliment the info stations and expand activation into three additional storefronts along South Division.
Along with creating visually engaging and vibrant spaces for pedestrians, we are also looking to capture the stories of the downtown neighborhood through these photos and art displays. Our goal is to create dynamic content that can be easily updated to keep up with changing stories and information of the neighborhood. This work came out of the Heartside Economic Development Workgroup and was a direct recommendation from the Heartside Quality of Life Study completed in 2016/2017 by the City of Grand Rapids.
